Female Journalists Call For Prioritization Of Women’s Agenda In The New Normal

Uganda Media Women’s Association (UMWA), an umbrella of female journalists in Uganda suggests that reflection on stakeholder key roles, functions and responsibilities would address the existent deficiencies.

“Naye nyabo wali olabwe ko namagonye omukade? Okimanyi nti abo baffa batto. Nze nkubulila, kumweka kyendiko simulabanga” (But madam have you ever seen an old person living with albinism? Do you know that they die young? Me I tell you that at my age, I have never seen one.)

The study also realized a gender selective reporting where there is a relationship between the sex of the reporter and the proportion of female and male news subjects appearing in print news stories. Female reporters covered more female news subjects and quoted more females in their stories as opposed to the male reporters. In equal measure, male journalists gave more audience to male sources but also within talk shows of purely male presentation, women suffered a low engagement under similar likelihood.
