On October 9th 1962, at such a time, the Union Jack was lowered as the beautiful red, black and yellow endeared flag to independence of Uganda was raised high. Indeed, Uganda had received its independence from the colonial rule of the British amidst loud merry and rays of hope for the future of the reborn nation.
59 years down the road, the country has realized immerse transformation politically and socio-economically. Therein, women have through the years somewhat gained visibility and empowerment in all spheres and yet to fully enjoy gender equality and equity.
Similarly Uganda has developed and embraced universal policies towards gender equality and women empowerment. This is in bid to achieve a holistic national building with the contribution of women as key players in both decision making, governance and socio-economic productions.
Among national policies to high score women are: Uganda Gender Policy 2007, National Action Plan I, II and III, Sustainable Development Goal 5, emphasis of Affirmative Action.
Therefore, what more can Uganda do beyond its achievements through 59years and how can it strive higher? This poses to all citizens and key players of Uganda. As a women in media umbrella, we submit to more and stronger advocacy for gender equality and portrayal of women and other marginalized in media and influencing favorable policies towards the same. What do you pledge for Uganda beyond 59!
