The training on Gender sensitive reporting boosted Alice Nalugya’s confidence to cover any story. she shares her experience.
“I am a female but most of the times I have been wondering why men take the lime light and yet I grew up with my mum and she provided for my needs singlehanded. It is unfortunate that while we grow up we are made to believe men are superior and women are down there with no voice. Surprisingly such context of gender sensitive reporting is not highlighted anywhere in universities.
I studied journalism but my lecturer would also stereotype and say women are not supposed to cover riots as if there is anything super special that a woman cannot do. I didn’t know why my lecturer used to tell us it’s a no go area for women. I always wondered whether it was the camera that became heavier for women to carry because we all cannot carry it. When it comes to assigning roles and responsibilities in media houses we are left because of perceptions from our bosses who think we are weak and cannot handle tasks like videography.
This training on gender sensitive reporting has boosted my confidence because finally I get to meet people to inspire me and tell me that I can go cover any story I want as long as am cautious. This is an eye opener for news editors to give equal opportunities and chances to cover men and women journalists cover beats in their respective media houses”
